The religious right is missing the boat on embryonic stem cell research. In fact, its opposition might be considered a sin. During in vitro fertilization, many test tube embryos are created so a few can survive and give childless couples the ability to "bring up baby."

What happens to the surplus embryos? They are simply thrown away, and somehow, in the minds of people like President Bush, Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson and much of the "G"reed "O"ver "P"eople party, this is better than allowing their use for research to save the sick.

If we use surplus embryos to save lives, we will be contributing to the quality of life for many sick citizens. Imagine being able to cure juvenile diabetes and spinal cord injuries.

We have the ability and the knowledge to help God create life, so why shouldn't we take this opportunity to help God save lives?

The religious right is wrong in its opposition to embryonic stem cell research. Those who oppose this research are not doing God's work by allowing in vitro embryos to be thrown away.
