Re: "Left behind," (letters, Sept. 8).

I share the writer's concern for the pets left behind by survivors of Hurricane Katrina. My heart broke when I heard about the little boy whose dog Snowball was taken from him.

Fortunately, The Humane Society of the United States has begun rescuing the animals left behind.

According to their web site, (http://www.hsus.org/), human society workers rescued the animals at the Superdome who were not allowed on the buses. The workers relocated these pets to safe shelters with the hope of reuniting them with their owners.

Hurricane Katrina was a tragedy for all God's creatures -- human and otherwise. Let's hope that Snowball and all the other pets are returned, safe and sound, to their loving owners.

Concerned citizens can help by visiting www.hsus.org and making a contribution to the disaster relief fund.
