Doug Forrester, 2005 Republican nominee for governor and master of negative campaigning, is used to being on the attack. So it should surprise nobody that Forrester doesn't enjoy playing defense. But that's where he finds himself now that his campaign-finance record is under scrutiny.

New Jersey's campaign-finance laws prohibit owners of insurance companies from giving campaign contributions, even to their own political campaigns. Doug Forrester owns an insurance company, Heartland Fidelity. By locating it in Washington, D.C., Forrester claimed exemption from New Jersey's campaign laws.

There's just one problem: Heartland Fidelity has no employees in Washington. They all work in New Jersey, and its daily business is also conducted in New Jersey. When given the chance to explain this situation, Forrester canceled his press conference and refused to answer questions.

When it comes to defending his record, Forrester wants to take his ball and go home. On Election Day, let's send him home to stay.
