John McCain made a campaign visit to an offshore oil rig this week after canceling the visit because of "bad weather". Is it possible that offshore drilling really isn't all that safe? McCain says that the solution to high gas prices is to drill. Yet, he opposed offshore drilling in the past. After changing his position, he received millions in campaign contributions from the oil lobby. You don't think that had anything to do with his flip-flop?
McCain claims to be for alternative energy development. Yet, when the Senate recently voted on a bill to channel $13 billion dollars of tax breaks to oil companies into alternative energy, he didn't show up for the vote. You don't think that he really is beholden to Big Oil now?
Drilling for oil won't bring the price down. There is no economic motivation to increase supply so that prices will fall. In fact, there are 38 million acres of land that could be drilled. Instead of using it, the oil industry trades leases to speculators instead.
Finally, there is no reason to think that any of the oil produced domestically will be sold here. Haven't we had enough of presidents who are beholden to the oil industry?
