Your endorsement is right: Bob Menendez is far more qualified than Tom Kean Jr., whose campaign has consisted mainly of typical Republican smearing -- he thinks if you blow enough smoke at an opponent, you can call it fire -- and riding on his father's name.

Kean would keep America entangled in the Bush quagmire in Iraq and add to the massive Republican debt being dumped on future generations (while millionaires and corporations feast).

Menendez is preferable on homeland security: He's long urged l protection for chemical plants and other vulnerable tar gets, while Republicans talk tough but have done far too little (and only when pushed). We're a little safer than before 9/11, but five years later we're not as safe as we should and could be -- and the experts (even Kean Sr.) agree another attack will come.

Most important, New Jersey could decide who controls the Senate -- which determines what gets voted on, whether there's any legislative check on executive abuses, even who may fill the next Supreme Court vacancy. The last thing America needs is another two years of uncurbed Republican power, even if Kean might occasionally dissent.
