Click here for link to published letter As a pro-life democrat, I was heartened by the results of last year's Congressional elections. Pro-life Democrat Bob Casey Jr. was elected junior senator from Pennsylvania, and several pro-life democrats were elected to the House of Representatives, including former NFL quarterback Heath Shuler. While New Jersey's democratic delegation remains solidly pro-choice, I'm optimistic that the national trend signifies that the voices of pro-life democrats will not be ignored.

Now, pro-life democrats in Congress are taking action to reduce the number of abortions by sponsoring the Reducing the Need for Abortion and Supporting Parents Act (HR 1074). This bill would help "reduce the number of unplanned pregnancies, reduce the need for abortion, help women bear healthy children, and support new parents." By providing support to pregnant women, HR 1074 would help them avoid the traumatic and tragic choice of abortion.

Abortion remains a difficult issue. But regardless of one's stance on the issue, hopefully, most people agree that reducing the number of abortions is a worthy goal. I urge anyone concerned about the number of abortions to contact their representatives in Congress and ask them to support HR 1074. I also suggest that pro-life democrats visit the Democrats for Life Web site at www.democratsforlife.org to learn how they can support members of their party who more closely share their beliefs.
