Holt, Lautenberg reintroduce bill to fill void in military’s suicide prevention efforts

"EAST BRUNSWICK — Township resident Linda Bean was back on Capitol Hill last week, accompanying U.S. Rep. Rush Holt as he reintroduced a bill aimed at closing a critical gap in suicide prevention for returning veterans.

“'This legislation seeks to build a bigger safety net for men and women who already have given this country the best they have,' said Bean, the mother of the late Sgt. Coleman Bean of East Brunswick. In September 2008, after serving two combat tours in Iraq, Coleman, who suffered from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), took his own life. He was 25.

"Holt (D-12th District) has tried in each of the past two years to pass the Sergeant Coleman S. Bean Reserve Component Suicide PreventionAct. The bill received House approval twice, but both times Republican senators blocked it from advancing to the president’s desk."
