Rep. Frank LoBiondo, R-2nd District, began his State of the District speech with the Iraq war, decrying the "30-second sound bite" debate, saying it demoralizes the military. Because he didn't serve in Vietnam, he knows little about military morale. Now he appears to be out of touch with the American people.
Most Americans strongly support our brave fighting men and women, but no longer support President Bush. The latest poll of soldiers in Iraq shows only 35 percent approve of Bush's handling of the war and just 41 percent believe the U. S. should be there.
When Republicans controlled Congress, LoBiondo had many opportunities to support soldiers' health care. Now he's seething at the conditions, condemning how difficult it is for injured to receive medical care. This from a man who never saw a tax cut for the wealthy he couldn't support, although savings from those cuts were earmarked to provide health care for soldiers and veterans.
He, like Fox News, states that Clinton "fired" all U.S. attorneys when he took office, conveniently overlooking that every incoming president, including George W. Bush, receives resignations from all U.S. attorneys before appointing their own. During the previous 25 years, only two U.S. attorneys were fired midterm. Although politically appointed, U.S. attorneys are expected to be independent. However, in 2005 Attorney General Gonzales' chief of staff, D. Kyle Sampson (since resigned), advocated firing 15 to 20 percent who were unlike those "loyal" to Bush.
Although the eight recently fired were Bush appointees, their replacements require no Senate confirmation because of a statement Bush placed in the Patriot Act.
Can anyone still question whether Gonzales' loyalty is to Bush or we the people?
