The debate on global warming is, for all practical purposes, over. The verdict is in from the scientific community: Worldwide climate change, largely caused by the burning of fossil fuels, presents a grave threat to the Earth's future.
Even one of the longest holdouts against science — President George W. Bush — now admits that global warming is a real problem and that perhaps we should do something about it, although how much action Bush will take is anyone's guess.
Yet the Home News Tribune continues to print letters that distort the facts and ignore science in obstinate denials of global warming.
I understand the newspaper seeks to appear unbiased and must make an effort to present "both sides" of the debate. But when the facts are in and science has reached a consensus, the time for debate ends and the need for serious action begins.
Or can we expect to see letters from members of the Flat Earth Society in the Home News Tribune's opinion section?
