"U.S. Rep. Chris Smith, who has made human rights issues a cornerstone of his congressional career, encountered governmental restrictions first hand this week in the city where the Olympics will soon be held.

"Smith, along with a Virginia congressman, had hoped to discuss human rights with three lawyers during a trip to Beijing, China, but police detained the lawyers."
