It been a possibility so long, the reality snuck up on everyone.

Barack Obama is the Democratic Party's nominee for president.

While not official until the convention delegates vote in August, Obama is the first African-American to win a party nomination and is one big step from becoming the nation's first black president.

But it did not a produce a "Where were you when ... ?" moment. It was no Louis-Schmeling, or Jesse Owens in Berlin, or Jackie Robinson breaking in with the Dodgers. No one gathered around TVs or celebrated in the streets. As a historic moment, it lacked drama, and that's not necessarily bad. Because the way it happened -- by slow, torturous election-law process, coming 150 years after slavery ended and 50 years after the civil rights movement began -- speaks as much for the country's time in history as it does for the candidate's.
