Using less, not drilling more,is the answer to oil problem Regarding the May 5 letter "U.S. must drill our own oil" and May 8 letter "Stop blaming oil companies - and start drilling for oil": Both writers seem to think we have huge deposits that will offset what we import. The oil reserves on U.S. soil and offshore, from working wells and those not yet drilled, cannot meet the 25 percent of total world production we consume each day. Oil is a finite resource, and most of the easily accessible reserves have already been drilled. The only ones left have low yields, are costly to extract or contain lower-grade crude. That is why the oil companies are content to operate their refineries at 86 percent capacity, make record profits and not spend any money to drill for a depleting resource. So don't blame the Democrat-controlled Congress for a business decision. The answer is to elect leaders who will implement an energy policy that rewards conservation, punishes waste, raises automotive fuel-efficiency standards, eliminates fossil fuel subsidies, and underwrites research for new energy sources that reduce emissions containing hazardous elements such as sulfur and carbon that cause global warming.
