NEW BRUNSWICK —Following impassioned, occasionally heady appeals from about 20 students and community members, the City Council on Wednesday night passed a resolution opposing the war in Iraq and supportive of free speech.

The resolution, approved unanimously, was introduced and read during the council session by a Rutgers University student, Jordan Bucey.

Councilman Joseph Egan and city attorney William Hamilton said they could not recall a similar occurence where a resolution was as swiftly passed after its introduction from the floor.
