A Major War and a Major Debacle

How could a recent report, "Choosing War: The Decision to Invade Iraq and Its Aftermath," not receive front-page coverage? It opened with "measured in blood and treasure, the war in Iraq has achieved the status of a major war and a major debacle."  It's a devastating indictment of President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and national security advisers Condoleezza Rice and Stephen Hadley, who used false information to further their agenda. Written by a former senior Pentagon official who served under Rumsfeld, it was released by the Institute for National Strategic Studies, established in 1984 under a charter from the Secretary of Defense and a Memorandum of Understanding with the director of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Defense and intelligence officials and highly respected scholars research and analyze U.S. defense strategy and national security. It acknowledges that the "surge" under Gen. David Petraeus has somewhat increased security, but not enough to guarantee Iraqi democracy. The consensus is that the outcome is in doubt and that "we can't win," although some still insist "we must win." Spin led us into this war. We now deserve the facts. With more than 4,000 dead 30,000 seriously injured and 300,000 with mental problems, Bush ignores veterans' needs, while requesting another $108 billion in war funding added to the $600 billion already spent. Hopefully, further damage by Bush will be limited until we elect someone to lead us out of his disaster.
