Jesse Weinstein, a 14-year-old eighth-grader at Orange Avenue School in Cranford, can empathize with victims of the conflict in Darfur, where hundreds of thousands have died in racially-tinged regional fighting.

"Some of my family were in concentration camps during the Holocaust, and people then said this would never happen again," he said. "But it is happening again, now, and it shows us something's very wrong today."
