However, there are many things wrong with that line of reasoning: The prisoner tells us what we want to hear; it is already illegal internationally and in the United States; it invites our enemies to torture our soldiers; it leaves as many psychological scars on those who administer it as those who receive it; and our enemies have enlisted many new recruits displaying photos of Americans torturing Arab prisoners.
I've heard Mr. LoBiondo speak on the subject of torture and he seems to be under the impression that prisoners are only made to feel somewhat uncomfortable. He does not realize that the discomfort has been so great for some that they have suffered great bodily harm and even death. These abuses have been documented by investigative reporter Seymour Hersh, and Major General Antonio Taguba, author of a report on the treatment of Abu Ghraib prisoners.
Mr. LoBiondo has voted to make preemptive war, for every emergency appropriation to pay for the war in Iraq, against every attempt to force President Bush to a timetable to bring our soldiers home, against minimum rest periods for our soldiers, and now has again voted for torture.
