Given a Senate committee's approval of the attorney general's request for a delay in implementa tion of a voter-verified paper trail for electronic machines, the Dec. 1 editorial cartoon lampooning Rus sia's elections could just as readily be captioned "New Jersey elections." By allowing the continued use of suspect machines, the Senate State Government Committee compromised voters' right to know if their votes are properly counted. Election officials in charge of overseeing electronic machine performance have shown little understanding of the electronics, let alone the potential ease of hacking, and have ignored their duty to investigate and follow up on reported electronic machine malfunctions. Last year, glitches led to municipal miscounts in Ocean County and problems all over the United States. Nor does the attorney general promise to have voter-verified trails in place by June, alluding to some "plan B." Voters deserve paper ballots in the upcoming winter and spring elections, not more machine malfunctions. Until the state fixes the mess it created, I am voting by absentee ballot. -- Anne Barron, Highland Park |
