Debbie Kopy writes on Feb. 17 that anti-war protests are wrong because of the volunteer military. This is a flawed argument. The anti-war protests are not against the soldiers but are against neoconservative policies.
The Iraq war was based on lies. Saddam Hussein was not an imminent threat, nor was he associated with al-Qaida.
There is reason to think al-Qaida will attack us here in the United States again if they can. Are we foolish to presume they will attack our best armed fighting force when they can attack soft targets in our nation? Did the Iraq war prevent the train bombings in Madrid and London? In fact, the war motivated new recruits to attack the nations that started it.
The anti-war movement is not a "feel good" festival. The people in the movement have given up their personal time because they believe ending this war is imperative. Our nation has been bankrupted by this war. Important social investment has been cut. Even the veterans do not receive the health care they deserve.
Indeed, it's long past time to end the Iraq debacle and bring the troops home now. |
