In the Aug. 22 article, "LoBiondo: Troop surge bringing dramatic results," Rep. Frank LoBiondo, R-2nd, wants us to know how independent he is. "I've never followed anyone blindly," he says. Yet his words parrot President Bush's message of how successful the surge is and that a precipitous pullout will bring chaos. The implication is that we are just months from getting things under control - something heard often since this war of choice began. LoBiondo, who enjoyed a deferment during the Vietnam conflict, does not grasp the military's overriding message that Iraq's problems cannot be solved by force but rather by political reconciliation. Bush's insistence on an oil agreement, written by the United States, financially benefits international oil companies to the detriment of Iraqi citizens who overwhelmingly oppose it. While LoBiondo voted against exerting control of Iraqi oil, a lengthy U.S. occupation guarantees it. It's too bad that LoBiondo doesn't work as hard for our soldiers as he did to promote the war. He has voted against every attempt to bring the troops home and to provide increased health care by reducing the tax cut on those with incomes of $1 million. He also voted against minimum rest periods between tours in Iraq. These votes reveal his true allegiance. NICK REINA Milmay |
