There were only about a dozen members of the Bryn Mawr Peace Coalition standing at Bryn Mawr and Lancaster avenues last Friday evening, but their message reached a multitude.
In quiet protest, this group, which includes a number of Lower Merion residents, held signs that spoke volumes. "Two thousand, five hundred U.S. deaths; 18,356 casualties, many with profound disabilities ... in a war with no justification," stated a bright pink one held by Karen Barton of Bryn Mawr.
"Every single car that went by gave us the thumbs up and blew their horns," said Monique Frugier of Ardmore, one of over 100 members of the Bryn Mawr Peace Coalition which was launched three years ago by Jerilynn Ratcliffe of Bryn Mawr and several others. "As a whole, people were very receptive - they were screaming 'Bravo!' "
The group, which protests monthly, was standing vigil for the 2,500th death of a U.S. soldier in Iraq. Since Friday, that number continues to grow with two U.S. soldiers found dead Tuesday.
"Every person who dies, it makes me want to scream," said Frugier, who lost her own father during World War II.
"We want to see a total pull-out immediately," said Frugier. When asked about the repercussions, she did not hesitate.
"... The more we stay there, the more we fuel the insurgents. That's the bottom line," said Frugier. "...For me, Bush is responsible for every single person who has died in Iraq - American, Iraq, everyone," she said.
"He opened a can of worms that wasn't there."
