It has long been obvious that President Bush and Vice-President Cheney misled Congress, the American people, and the international community in rushing into an unjustified war with Iraq. Bush claimed that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction and posed an immediate threat to the United States. He and his administration also insinuated that Iraq was in some way linked to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. These claims were all proven to be untrue. The Downing Street memos confirmed that the Bush administration "fixed the intelligence" in order to justify going to war with Iraq.
Since then, egregious misuses of Presidential power have continued unchecked, including the White House's leak of covert CIA agent Valerie Plame's name, the unlawful warrantless wiretapping of American citizens without obtaining search warrants, the suspension of habeas corpus for detainees at Guantanamo Bay, the sanctioning of torture, and the firing of eight U. S. attorneys for political reasons.
Impeachment cannot occur unless Congress begins an honest inquiry into these offenses. A new group, A28 (www.a28.org) is coordinating nationwide actions on impeachment beginning on April 28, 2007.
The NJ Media Corps recognizes that not everyone believes impeaching George W. Bush and Dick Cheney is the best way forward for our country. But for the many who strongly believe that impeachable offenses have occurred, the time to act is now. Visit www.a28.org and write your newspapers, supporting an honest inquiry into the offenses of the Bush Administration.
Actions: 1. Write letters to local, state, and national publications, asking readers to support John Conyers' petition:

- In your letter, use some (not all) of the talking points (see below). Two or three is a good number. Keep your letter short and to the point. For more background, see the articles and research linked at the end of this document.
2. Visit www.a28.org to search for and participate in impeachment actions in your area.
3. Urge Congress to take up Rep. Kucinich's articles of impeachment:

Talking points: - The Downing Street memos show Bush was fixing intelligence to suit a pro-war agenda. The memos and related documents provide evidence that by the summer of 2002, President Bush decided to deceive and mislead the Congress and the American people with false claims about both weapons of mass destruction and ties between Saddam Hussein and 9-11; secretly diverted $700 million from the War in Afghanistan; and started bombing Iraq to provoke a war. There constitute impeachable offenses.
- Bush claimed in his 2003 State of the Union speech that Iraq bought yellow cake from Niger for the purposes of building nuclear weapons - a claim the International Atomic Energy Agency said was based on forged documents (click here for the IAEA's full report).
- The nonpartisan Congressional Research Service concluded that the Bush administration's use of the National Security Agency to perform domestic eavesdropping without warrants is "inconsistent with the law."
- Article II of the U.N. Charter, a treaty among the nations of the world, states that "all members shall refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state." The United States has violated Article II with the war against Iraq, and threatens to do so again by threatening aggression against Iran.
