Action Page 2008-03: Barack Obama for President PDF Print E-mail

America has been speeding in the wrong direction for nearly eight years.  Under the Bush administration, our nation has become mired in an unjustified war; our economy has suffered from a weakening dollar, astronomical oil prices, mortgage crises and widespread bank failures; the EPA has failed to regulate the carbon emissions that contribute to global warming; and the number of Americans uninsured by health coverage has reached 47 million.  Change is in order, and the outcome of the 2008 Presidential election will decide our nation's ability to effect that change.

The Republican nominee for President, Senator John McCain of Arizona, has a heroic war record and reputation as a "maverick."  Sadly, Senator McCain has evolved into a spokesman for Bush administration policies, vigorously supporting Bush's expansion of the war in Iraq and changing his position on issues like offshore drilling and tax cuts for the wealthiest one percent of Americans.  On the economy, Senator McCain's lack of knowledge is alarming.  Senator McCain is clearly not the agent of change our nation sorely needs.

Senator Barack Obama (D-IL), the Democratic nominee for President, will change our country's course on issues like the war in Iraq, the environment, economic policy, and open government.  Senator Obama's command of the issues is impressive, and he displays the potential to appeal across demographic boundaries and reach consensus on critical issues facing our nation.  For a nation mired in military, economic, and environmental quagmires, the 2008 election offers a crucial opportunity to achieve positive change.  Senator Barack Obama is clearly better equipped to effect such change, and the New Jersey Media Corps enthusiastically endorses him for President.

On March 2th, a Cuban immigrant detainee, Arturo Alvarez, died from a heart attack he suffered while being held in Middlesex County jail. A petition signed by over 90 detainees contends that Mr. Alvarez asked for medical help on February 29th and was given Tylenol and some medications that he had, but no doctor was on call to see him.  He died on March 2th in St. Peters Hospital emergency room.  Detainees at this facility are so concerned about the neglect towards severe medical complaints that they signed a petition to Homeland Security Secretary Chertoff and United States Attorney General Mukasey (see link below).

Action Page 2008-01: Support Efforts to Bring Troops Home From Iraq PDF Print E-mail

American troops have been in Iraq for nearly five years. The unjustified invasion of Iraq, begun in March 2003, has dragged on with no end in sight. Sadly, American casualties continue to mount: nearly 4000 dead and tens of thousands seriously wounded.

United for Peace and Justice is calling for and supporting a set of activities on and around the 5th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq that will manifest the intensifying opposition to the war. You can help: write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper, calling for an end to our involvement in Iraq, and supporting the events taking place to mark the 5th anniversary of the war.

Action Page 2007-03: Support Inquiry into Bush Administration Offenses PDF Print E-mail

Sunday, 22 April 2007
It has long been obvious that President Bush and Vice-President Cheney misled Congress, the American people, and the international community in rushing into an unjustified war with Iraq.  Bush claimed that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction and posed an immediate threat to the United States.  He and his administration also insinuated that Iraq was in some way linked to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.  These claims were all proven to be untrue.  The Downing Street memos confirmed that the Bush administration "fixed the intelligence" in order to justify going to war with Iraq.
