N.J. Gov. Christie wrong on civil rights, marriage PDF Print E-mail

Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ)"We have witnessed many civil rights battles in America, but the civil rights battle of the moment is marriage equality. Same-sex couples who agree to enter committed, long-term relationships should be able to enjoy the same legal protections as other families.

"Gov. Chris Christie disagrees. Making matters worse, the governor is trying to hide his position by punting this civil rights issue to a referendum, saying, 'I think people would have been happy to have a referendum on civil rights rather than fighting and dying in the streets in the South.'

"This was a shameful statement and the governor’s half-hearted apology doesn’t change the fact that he wants to hide behind a referendum to avoid showing leadership on one of the most significant civil rights issues of our time."

Rush Holt (D-12th, NJ)E. Brunswick’s Linda Bean says services must be immediately accessible, 24 hours a day

"The figure, Rep. Rush Holt said, is stunning: Eighteen veterans commit suicide each day.

“'That’s a daily average that is intolerable,' he said. 'We can’t let that continue.'

"And now, after years of advocacy and the work and support of East Brunswick residents Linda and Greg Bean, whose son died by suicide after serving two tours in Iraq, Holt (D-12th District) announced he has secured funding that just might help to turn these tragic figures around. Holt announced during a teleconference on Monday that $40 million will be allocated in the final 2012 federal budget to support military suicide prevention."

Wetlands on Cape May, New Jersey, USA. (Anthony Bley, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers)"Legislation has been introduced (S3156 by Sen. Paul Sarlo and A4335 by Assemblyman Albert Couhtino) that would give us dirty water, higher utility costs and paved-over open spaces. It is moving quickly through the state Senate and Assembly.

"This legislation will undermine environmental protection by allowing development in environmentally sensitive areas such as wetlands, endangered species habitat and next to reservoirs — a destructive gift to developers. This developers’ proposal would also weaken environmental standards protecting home wells."
